The UK’s music industry is one of the most dynamic, innovative and fast-moving in the world. According to This is Music 2023, from research by campaigning and lobbying group UK Music, in 2022 the industry:
- UK music exports generated £4 billion in 2022.
- Music industry’s contribution to UK economy was £6.7 billion (GVA) in 2022.
- Total UK music industry employment was 210,000 in 2022.
The creative industries overall account for almost 12% of all UK businesses, and is the fastest-growing sector of the economy, according to DCMS.
That’s without considering the wider contribution made by music retail, music education, manufacturing, community music, music therapy, journalism and an array of other music-related occupations.
Taking all these into account, it could be argued that the true value of music to the economy is much higher.
This is a thriving industry serving an insatiable global demand
Employment opportunities in music vary enormously from performers, producers, composers, managers, teachers, therapists and more. Those who can make money from music often have the skills to morph from one line of work to another.
For example, you may start as a session player, but along the way include some teaching and community work, producing and editing, developing and launching new music products and being an examiner.
Everybody’s journey is different depending on skills, interests, personal contacts and, let’s face it, some luck. But what everyone has in common is a passion for music, diversity, flexibility and a willingness to explore new opportunities.
The majority of people working in the music sector are freelancers and entrepreneurs managing complex portfolio careers. At Resonance, we provide an educational experience which reflects and supports this reality.
